Man slapped over tobacco at Golden Temple

AMRITSAR: In another incident of violation of ‘rehat maryada’ (the Sikh code of conduct) at Golden Temple, a visitor was confronted by a Sikh man for carrying tobacco. In a viral video, a Sikh man is seen slapping the visitor repeatedly and telling him to empty his pocket. The visitor relents and shows him small pouches, resembling those of tobacco, but denies chewing them.
The Sikh man, identified as Harpal Singh, general secretary of the Simranjit Singh Mann-led SAD(A), said he intervened after seeing the visitor rub tobacco in his hands before entering the temple. He said he exercised restraint and had just given “mild slaps to teach a lesson to others”. He also targeted sewadars of SGPC, responsible for the temple’s affairs. However, SGPC clarified the man wasn’t their employee.
