MI vs GT: Waited for this opportunity for a long time, says Mumbai pacer Akash Madhwal

By India Today Sports Desk: Mumbai Indians have found ways to deal with multiple injury concerns in the IPL 2023 season and have found new heroes as the group stages near its climax. Despite losing some of their biggest match-winners, including Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. One of the men who put his hand up and stepped up on Friday was 29-year-old Akash Madhwal as he shone with the ball in their 27-run win over defending champions Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium.

Akash Madhwal, who made his IPL debut earlier in May, has grown in confidence and it was evident with the way he shouldered the pace attack in Mumbai Indians' successful defence of 218 runs against Gujarat TItans.

Madhwal set the tone for Mumbai, removing in-form Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha and breaking the back of the Gujarat Titans' chase. It was the first time Madhwal was used with the new-ball by captain Rohit Sharma and he gave MI the big breakthroughs.

Madhwal returned for his second spell and got the big wicket of David Miller, who was looking to go big, with a slower-ball that crashed into the South African batter's pads.

Madhwal, who was signed by Mumbai Indians as a replacement player for Suryakumar Yadav in IPL 2022 at his base price of Rs 20 lakh, is slowly but surely making heads turn in the IPL.

"I have bowled in the past in the dew. So it wasn't much tough. We have practiced in these conditions and it helped me. Rohit bhaiya asked me to bowl hard lengths and it got me rewards," Akash Madhwal said after finishing with figures of 3 for 31.

"I have bowled him in the nets but he bats incredibly. I was waiting for three years for this opportunity and I'm enjoying my time," he added.

Akash Madhwal, who comes from Dehradun, has toiled hard before he got the IPL spotlight. He made his first-class debut for Uttarakhand in 2014 and his List A debut in 2015.

With a fine ability to bowl slower balls and yorkers, Madhwal is hungrier for more.

"These won't be my best figures in IPL as the best is yet to come," Madhwal said.

Mumbai Indians rose to the 3rd spot in the IPL 2023 points table, only 2 points behind leaders Gujarat Titans as they boosted their playoffs hopes.
