Coastal Mediterranean city is ‘vibrant’ with a ‘Baroque charm’ and still hot in autumn

Catania is one of the southernmost points of Italy, situated at the foot of Sicily on its exposed east coast.

The sprawling shoreline borders the Ionian Sea, so the Mediterranean city boasts a mixture of both white sand and rocky volcanic beaches, coupled with cultural hotspots dotted throughout.

Travel experts at Iglu Cruise claimed: "Catania is a beautiful Italian city located on the eastern side of Sicily on the slopes of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.

"It was founded between 729 and 728 BC by the Greeks of Chalcis and, like the other major Sicilian cities, it was subjected to the domination of different populations because of its strategic position on the sea.

"With fine architecture, rich history and plenty of attractions to explore, this destination is perfect for those looking for a jam-packed adventure all whilst enjoying fine Italian cuisine and drinks."

One of the standout features of Catania is its everchanging landscape which has come to be as a result of Mount Etna.

The city had been wiped out on two occasions in the 1600s but bounced back in the 17th century when the city that can be seen today was established.

According to travel blogger Jenny, founder of The Crave Traveler, the historic city boasts a unique "Baroque charm", with the "perfect mix of Greek and Roman history".

She warned that while the old-school flair of the city is hard not to love, it does mean cash machines are rare so visitors should be prepared when it comes to buying local currency (euros).

Coupled with its "vibrant" local attractions and culture, the Sicilian destination is a less popular but worthy holiday spot for sun-seeking tourists.

Like many places in Italy, Catania is at its best in the summer when the exposed coastline basks in temperatures that climb upwards of 30C. However, it does maintain its warmth into the autumn.

Those looking for a getaway in October will find average temperatures of around 25C in the region, though the evenings do get chillier at around 14C.

Even in November, the climate boasts 20C averages, while the UK peaks at around 9C throughout the month.

With a host of cultural attractions to explore in the area there is no shortage of things to do and see in Catania all year round.

Thrill-seekers can take a guided tour up Mount Etna, which measures 3,326 metres above sea level. Alternatively, the Monastero di Benedettini is popular with those interested in history and local culture.

According to the Iglu Cruise experts, one of the most famous sites in the region is the Massimo Bellini Theatre, which was built in the 19th century.

They said: "It was inaugurated on May 31, 1890, with the Norma opera by the Catania composer Vincenzo Bellini. The hall has a horseshoe-shaped structure with four tiers of boxes and a gallery."
