NEW DELHI: The CBI has filed an FIR against suspended NIA SP Vishal Garg and an inspector on charges of extortion and criminal conspiracy. The two officers were booked on NIA's complaint that they had allegedly extorted Rs 60 lakh from three residents of Manipur by threatening to implicate them in false terror-funding cases. They were sending verbal/informal notices to people for questioning and allegedly extorting money from them.
"We had received information that Garg, the then SP, NIA branch office, Imphal, along with inspector Rajib Khan, was collecting huge amounts of money from residents of Manipur through cut-outs. A detailed internal inquiry was conducted after that," said an official. The probe revealed that the NIA had registered a case on March 9, 2022 with allegations that active cadres of terrorist organisations are raising funds in Manipur. Garg, being SP-NIA, was the the first supervisory officer in the case. On Garg's directions, Khan was assisting in the probe.
"Inquiry revealed a clear modus operandi wherein certain businessmen and professionals were called for examination. They were threatened with false implication in Garg's presence," the FIR claims. The accused cops would subsequently offer help to them in lieu of money.
